As part of the official EU Open Days – European Week of Cities and Regions programme, the Brussels Office hosted a workshop on ‘The Rising Impact of Healthcare Innovation on the Regional Economy’ on 14th October, partnered with six other EU regions.
We were delighted to have Toni Dedeu (EUREGHA) to moderate the debate, a keynote speech from Ilias Iakovidis (DG CNCT) and expert contributions from Jean-Emmanuel Faure (DG RTD) and Jens Sorvik (Joint Research Centre) from the European Commission.
Andrew McCormick, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) spoke about Northern Ireland’s unique Health Care System and the region’s potential to function as a ‘Living Lab’ for healthcare innovation in the UK. Representatives from the other partner regions – Karlovac (Croatia), Navarra (Spain), Umbria (Italy), Podlaskie (Poland), Swietokrzyskie (Poland) and Limousin (France) – also offered local insight and experience, and contributions for the EU Commission and experts in the field provovoked lively debate.
The event, attended by over 80 representatives from across Europe, was an excellent opportunity for regional networking and for Northern Ireland to showcase its example to a diverse audience.
