SOCIAL ASPECTS OF JUSTICE

How we tackle serious harms in our society

Tuesday 28 February 2023

1800 - 2030 CET

The Office of the Northern Ireland Executive in Brussels, together with the

Department of Justice (DoJ) and Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)

invites you to attend the second event in our series of three exploring our contribution to the social value of justice in Northern Ireland.

Mark Goodfellow, Director of Safer Communities in the Department of Justice will open the event and provide a strategic overview of work underway across the Department of Justice and with operational partners to tackle some of the most serious harms from criminality to Northern Ireland society.

PSNI's Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Hill, Head of Organised Crime and Detective Inspector Rachel Miskelly will deliver a presentation on tackling cross border organised crime and wider serious organised crime threats in Northern Ireland, including drugs, money laundering and fraud, paramilitary activity and how it impacts on vulnerable communities, firearms and human trafficking. Their presentation will also explore the role of the Organised Crime Task Force and Joint Agency Task Force and examine a recent operation into Human Trafficking with a cross border dimension.

Hidden Harms - Paramilitarism in NI - Adele Brown, Programme Director of the Executive Programme on Tackling Paramilitarism, Criminality and Organised Crime will speak about the progress made in addressing paramilitarism in the 25 years since the peace process. She will explore the framework used by the Northern Ireland Executive’s Tackling Paramilitary, Criminality and Organised Crime Programme to support people and communities who are vulnerable to paramilitary influence and harm as well as the efforts needed to break the generational cycle of harm, trauma, coercion and violence.

Continued engagement with the EU is a priority for the Department of Justice in Northern Ireland and we want to contribute to, and learn from, justice issues across Europe. We see clear links between social and economic outcomes and justice issues and we aim to explore these through our programme of events.

Our first presentation took place on the theme of “How we play a role in our society and for our citizens” and was held in November 2022. The final event in the series, scheduled for April 2023, will showcase how the Department of Justice seeks to look after the people in our custody and care.

We very much value the opportunity to share experiences and to optimise learning.
