SOCIAL ASPECTS OF JUSTICE

“How we look after the people in our care”

Tuesday 25 April 2023

1800 - 2030 CET

The Office of the Northern Ireland Executive in Brussels, together with the Department of Justice, Northern Ireland Prison Service and Probation Board for Northern Ireland

invites you to attend the third and final event in our series of three exploring our contribution to the social value of justice in Northern Ireland.

Mark Goodfellow, Director of Safer Communities in the Department of Justice, will open the event and provide a strategic overview of work underway across the Department of Justice and with operational partners to look after those in our custodial care, support measures to promote their rehabilitation, and to help reduce some of the most serious harms from criminality to Northern Ireland society.

Maria Watson, Deputy Director of Rehabilitation in the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS), has responsibility for the rehabilitation of the population across prison establishments in NI. Maria will deliver a presentation on how we look after those held in our care and how we challenge them to change. Maria will also explore how we deliver rehabilitation in partnership with statutory and voluntary/community sector colleagues, with a clear emphasis on the journey continuing from point of entry to beyond release from custody.

Stephen Hamilton, Director of Operations for the Probation Board for Northern Ireland (PBNI), has responsibility for the strategic oversight and operational service delivery of PBNI within prison establishments in NI. He will discuss the PBNI service delivery model in custody for those assessed as high likelihood of re-offending and/ or significant risk of serious harm, how resettlement needs are met to reduce re-offending and how this is achieved through the lens of both clients and victims.

Continued engagement with the EU is a priority for the Department of Justice in Northern Ireland and we want to contribute to, and learn from, justice issues across Europe. We see clear links between social and economic outcomes and justice issues and we aim to explore these through our programme of events.

We very much value the opportunity to share experiences and to optimise learning.
