European Day of Languages 2021

The 20th European Day of Languages is on 26 September and is organised jointly by the European Union and the Council of Europe to celebrate Europe’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.

In Northern Ireland, the Department for Communities is responsible for languages, and progress is underway in developing co-design strategies for two of the indigenous languages used here; Ulster-Scots and Irish. Following on from a commitment made in New Decade, New Approach (NDNA), the Language Strategies Team within DfC is taking the lead in developing this work and you can find out more information here.

To take part in the European Day of Languages, visit the dedicated website for information and ideas about how to celebrate the day; from language facts and trivia, to games, puzzles and idioms.
