This year’s European Mobility Week theme is ‘Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility’. The choice of this year’s theme pays tribute to the hardships felt by Europe – and around the world – throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. It also reflects on the opportunities for change resulting from the unprecedented health crisis in Europe.
European Mobility Week is the Commission’s flagship awareness-raising campaign on sustainable urban mobility, running from 16 to 22 September 2021. It promotes behavioural change in favour of active mobility, public transport, and other clean, intelligent transport solutions.
During European Mobility Week, the city of Brussels will take part in Car Free Sunday while Northern Ireland host a similar initiative throughout the month of September: Active Travel Challenge.
Active Travel Challenge
This challenge is to encourage citizens across NI to leave the car at home in an effort to promote cleaner, healthier and more environmentally friendly ways to get around. The aim is to inspire people to adopt greener travel options that will prioritise their health and wellbeing and support Northern Ireland’s ‘green’ economic recovery and progress towards a low-carbon future.
This year the challenge presents a huge opportunity for people to change their travel habits for the better and chose to walk, cycle, take public transport or a combination, helping them stay physically active and supporting their mental wellbeing. These steps will help accelerate action on climate, improve local air quality and create a much better quality of life for all.
NI in Brussels
As some of our office members are in Brussels while others remain in Northern Ireland, we will have colleagues taking part in all challenges! See some of the pictures below of us embracing healthier and greener ways of getting about …
